Islamic-Christian Parallels (1) Empty
PostSubject: Islamic-Christian Parallels (1)   Islamic-Christian Parallels (1) Icon_minitimeSat Jul 09, 2011 5:33 am

Hadith Qudsi 20:

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

The gates of Paradise will be opened on Mondays and on Thursdays, and every servant [of Allah] who associates nothing with Allah will be forgiven, except for the man who has a grudge against his brother. [About them] it will be said: Delay these two until they are reconciled; delay these two until they are reconciled.

It was related by Muslim (also by Malik and Abu Dawud).

The same idea of the servants who have grudges against each other who will be delayed is found in this extract from Matthew :

5.21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’

22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

Another interesting example of parallel teachings is The Sheep and the Goats parable in Matthew:

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

This passage from Matthew is interesting for several reasons. It is in principle very much in line with the Islamic teachings though of course Jesus is replacing Allah in it:

1. The first parallel is:

Hadith Qudsi 18:

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, Allah (mighty and sublime be He) will say on the Day of Resurrection:

O son of Adam, I fell ill and you visited Me not. He will say, O Lord, and how should I visit You when You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say, Did you not know that My servant So-and-so had fallen ill and you visited him not? Did you not know that had you visited him you would have found Me with him?

O son of Adam, I asked you for food and you fed Me not. He will say, O Lord, and how should I feed You when You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say, Did you not know that My servant So-and-so asked you for food and you fed him not? Did you not know that had you fed him you would surely have found that (the reward for doing so) with Me?

O son of Adam, I asked you to give Me to drink and you gave Me not to drink. He will say, O Lord, how should I give You to drink whin You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say, My servant So-and-so asked you to give him to drink and you gave him not to drink. Had you given him to drink you would have surely found that with Me.

It was related by Muslim.

In addition, it has the same idea of People of the right who will go to Paradise and people of the left which will go to Hell, which is again directly paralleled in the Qur'an though in the Qur'an we have a third category of people who are on the right also, but are degree above the others:

[56:7]
and you will be (divided into) three categories.

[56:8]
As for the People of the Right, how (lucky) are the People of the Right!

[56:9]
And the People of the Left ? How (wretched) are the People of the Left!

[56:10]
And the Foremost are the foremost.

Also in verses 41 and 46:

[41] Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;

[46] And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

we find Jesus mentioning that the wrongdoers will be "cursed" into the ETERNAL FIRE, so Jesus, in this example, did talk about Fire/Hell and obviously here he says that life there is eternal, and this is exactly like Islam. On the other hand, the others will go to eternal bliss in heaven, again like Islam.
