Salat-at-Tasabeeh is a kind of salah which the common Muslim does not know about, and it is optional. However, it has a great merit.  Salat at-Tasabeeh is not limited to the month of Ramadan or  Layla-tul-Qadr.

It is a prayer which may be offered at any time during the year. You can do it at least once in a lifetime or you may not do it at all because it is not a compulsory prayer but it has a great merit. The Prophetm pbuh, is said to have advised his uncle to do it once a day; if not, then once a week (on Friday preferably); if not, then once a month; if not, then once a year; if not, then once in a life time.

Some scholars say Salatul tasbeeh is an innovation, but according to some scholars it is valid. It is said to have been based on this hadith:

Our Beloved Prophet Mohammed (Sallallaho Alihiwassallam) said to his uncle (father’s brother) Sayyiduna Abbass (may Allah be pleased with him), "Oh uncle! Shall I not give you? Shall I not grant you? Shall I not award you? ... If you do this, Allah will forgive your sins: first and last, old and new, indeliberate or deliberate, big and small, hidden and revealed. Then he (Sallallaho Alihiwassallam) explained the taught the way to pray ِSalat-at-Tasabeeh. Then he said if you can, pray this salah once a day; if you cannot pray once a day then every Friday; and even if this is not possible, then once a month; and even if this is not possible, then once a year; and even if this is not possible, then at least once in a lifetime (Abu’Dawood & Tirimzi).

How to Perform It?

You pray 4 rakaat as you pray Thuhr, for instance, but with the following differences:

1. You recite a short sura in all the four rak'aat instead of in only the first two.

2. You recite the following tasbeeh

Subhanallah, wal-hamdulillah, wa la ilaha illalLah, wa Allahu Akbar

75 times in every rak'aah (total 300 times in all the 4 raka'at)  according to the following division:

1. 15 times after reciting the Fatiha and a short sura.
2. 10 times after you finish the tasbeeh of bowing (subhana Rabeya Al Atheem).
3. 10 times after you rise up from bowing and saying the duaa you say then (i.e. same'a Allahu li
    man hamidah).
4. 10 times after you finish the tasbeeh of the first prostration (i.e. subhana Rabeya Al A'la).
5. 10 times after you rise up from prostrating and saying the duaa you say then (Rabee ighfir li
    wa irhamni).
6. 10 times after you finish the tasbeeh of the secondt prostration (subhana Rabeya Al A'la).
7.  10 times after you rise up from the second prostration  and before rising up for the next
    rakaah.

This makes 75 tasbeehs per rak'aah, and you repeat this in all the four raka''at.

In the second and fourth rakaahs, you do step no. 7 after reading half of the tashaud (in rakaah 2) or all of it (in rakaah 4) and before rising up for the next rak'aah.

It is preferable to recite after Surah Fatiha Sura Takathuur in the first raka’, Surah Wal A’sr in the second raka’, Surah Kaferoon (qul ya aiyuhal Kafiroon) in the third and Surah Akhlas (Qul hu Allah-hu ahd) in the fourth raka’. If one does not remember these surah they can recite the ones they prefer.

NB.

* (A tasbeeh is something said to glorify Allah like Al hamdulillah, Al hamdulillah, Al hamdulillah, Al
hamdulillah, Al hamdulillah ... or Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar ....)
