Supplication of Finishing the Qur'an Empty
PostSubject: Supplication of Finishing the Qur'an   Supplication of Finishing the Qur'an Icon_minitimeFri Aug 19, 2011 8:05 am

Question:

Is it Sunnah to recite a supplication after reading the Qur’ân from beginning to end? I read Imâm al-Nawawî’s book concerning the etiquettes of the Qur’ân. In it, he mentions the practice of getting together with others upon one’s completion of the reading of the Qur’ân and offering a supplication. He quoted different narrations from the Pious Predecessors to support this view. Can you please explain if it is something the Pious Predecessors did? If so, then please describe in detail how it is performed. And may Allah bless you. Please note, I am not asking about the practice of people gathering to read the Qur’ân together simultaneously.

The ruling on the supplication for completing the reading of the Qur’ân from beginning to end depends on how that supplication is offered.

If someone offers that supplication within prayer, then this is something unfounded. No such supplication was ever offered in prayer by the Prophet (peace be upon him) or by any of the Companions.

Offering the supplication after completing one’s prayer was a practice of the Companion Anas b. Mâlik, as authentically related in Sunan Abî Dâwûd.

Qatâdah b. Da`amah, the student of Anas, relates: “Whenever Anas b. Mâlik finished reading the Qur’ân from beginning to end, he would his family together and offer a supplication.

It is also authentically narrated from al-Hakam b. `Utaybah that he said: “Mujâhid and `Abdah b. Abî Lubâbah sent for me, saying: “We have sent for you since w e wish to complete the reading of the Qur’ân and supplications are accepted upon completing the Qur’ân.” [al-Adhkâr]

Ibn Taymiyah writes in his treatise entitled Ihdâ al-Thawâb lil-Nabî: “It has been related from a group of the Pious Predecessors that each time the reading the Qur’ân from beginning to end is completed, there is a supplication that is answered. Therefore, is a person after completing the Qur’ân supplicates for himself, his parents, his teachers, and other believing men and women, then this is among the acts that are sanctioned.”

The supplication should be offered by the one who read the Qur’ân. Those who are with him should say âmîn to his supplication. It is Sunnah to select supplications from the sacred texts, and to praise Allah and beseech Him by His names and attributes.

Allah says: “And Allah has the best of names, beseech Him by them.” [Sûrah al-A`râf: 180]

It is good to offer the supplication with humility and in private. The supplicant should not go overboard in his supplication in raising his voice and the like, since that contradicts the state of humility that the supplicant must bring to his supplication.

Allah says: “Call upon your Lord in humility and in private, for Allah loves not those who transgress beyond bounds.” [Sûrah al-A`
râf: 55]
